Lønstrup is a small coastal village on Denmark’s wild North Sea coast, known for its dramatic cliffs, fishing heritage, and vibrant community of artists and craftspeople. The landscape here is constantly reshaped by wind and sea: cliffs crumble, houses vanish, and the coastline slowly retreats, giving the area a raw, ever-changing character. The beach on the west is great for a walk along the cliffs where the lighthouse Rudbjer Knudde is located. This allows to see the lighthouse from a different angle as well. Or you can take the route on this page and pay a visit to the lighthouse and have a great day in the outdoors.
Best time to visit

- Dramatic skies – typical of the North Sea, with storm light and fiery sunsets.
Hiking tips
- Lønstrup ↔ Rubjerg Knude out-and-back: ~3–3.5 km each way (6–7 km round trip). Out via beach at low/mid tide, back over the dune/cliff-top path for variety. 1.5–2.5 h total; rolling dunes (~100–150 m cumulative gain).
- Rubjerg Knude dune circuit: 2–3 km loop around the lighthouse and highest dunes. Soft sand, exposed—bring wind protection.
- Lønstrup → Løkken coastal walk: 12–14 km one-way along the beach (only in safe conditions); arrange return by local bus or taxi.
- Access & parking: “Rubjerg Knude Fyr” (Rubjergvej) for the lighthouse/dunes; “Lønstrup Strand” for beach starts.
- Safety & conditions: Check tide and wind forecasts. In storms or surge, the beach may be impassable; use inland paths. No guardrails on dune crests; watch cornices.
- Gear: Waterproof boots or trail shoes for sand and wet sections; layers + windproof shell; headlamp for predawn/afterglow hikes.
- Drones: Observe local rules and signage; avoid flying over people or protected dune areas and maintain legal distances/altitude.
