Heilig Kreuz Chapel, Wallberg

Heilig Kreuz Chapel, Wallberg

The Heilig Kreuz Chapel stands on the summit ridge of the Wallberg, high above Lake Tegernsee in Upper Bavaria. At 1,722 metres, this small mountain chapel is one of the most iconic viewpoints in the region β€” a simple white structure surrounded by alpine meadows and overlooking the shimmering blue of Tegernsee far below. The chapel was built in the 19th century as a place of rest and reflection for travellers and shepherds, and today it remains a beloved symbol of the Bavarian Alps.

In autumn, the view from the Wallberg is nothing short of spectacular. The forests on the slopes below glow in shades of orange and gold, while the higher peaks already carry the first dusting of snow. On clear days, the light stretches across the lake and valleys, revealing the layered silhouettes of the surrounding mountains. The contrast between the crisp mountain air, the warm autumn tones, and the serene white chapel creates a scene that feels timeless.

Reaching the Heilig Kreuz Chapel is part of the experience. You can ascend the mountain by cable car from Rottach-Egern and walk the last section to the summit, or hike the full route through forests and alpine pastures. Either way, the path offers continuous views that unfold with every turn β€” especially rewarding when the morning mist clears and the sun begins to illuminate the landscape below.

Best time to visit:
Early to mid-October, when the deciduous forests around Tegernsee reach peak colour and the higher ridges may already show the first traces of winter. Visit early in the morning for the best light and quieter trails.

Practical tips:
The Wallbergbahn cable car from Rottach-Egern takes you most of the way up; from the top station, it’s about a 20-minute walk to the chapel. Dress in layers β€” temperatures can change quickly at this altitude. The summit area has a restaurant and viewing terrace with panoramic views across the Alps.

Photography tips

Sunrise and late afternoon provide the most dramatic light. From the path above the chapel, you can frame the small white building with the lake far below β€” a classic Bavarian composition. A wide-angle lens captures the vastness of the landscape, while a telephoto lens is ideal for isolating the chapel against the backdrop of coloured forests. For sunrise you will need to get up early and good fitness is required as you will need to get up the mountain hiking as the cable cart does not operate that early.

Hiking tips

For experienced hikers, the full ascent from Rottach-Egern takes around 2.5 hours, gaining about 900 metres of elevation. Alternatively, take the cable car and explore the circular trails around the summit. In autumn, trails can be slippery with leaves and frost in shaded sections, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
