It had been quite a while since I last worked in the studio. Caught up with other projects, as often happens. But finally, it was time to create something fun again! I had been thinking about creating a series of photos with striking colors for a while. Simple statements—not too busy but still eye-catching.
In this blog, I’ll take you behind the scenes and share the process of creation of this striking still life featuring three red bell peppers as the stars.

Inspiration Behind the Work
The simplicity of everyday objects can often be the most inspiring. Especially when you observe them up close, the most stunning details often emerge. Using a macro lens in such cases opens up a world of wonder. I love using it both indoors and outdoors.
Outdoors, I use it to photograph all the beauty nature has to offer—from insects to flowers and mushrooms. Indoors, this fantastic lens captures the most remarkable details in a single shot.
For this still life, I was inspired by the traditional method of drying peppers on a clothesline. The idea of smoke gently rising added a sense of dynamism and warmth. This not only symbolizes rustic charm but also the idea of time and tradition in the kitchen.
For the smoke effect, I used steaming water. A smoke machine is still on my wish list, but for now, creative improvisation does the trick!

The Studio Process
Concept Development
It started with gathering inspiration on a mood board. As mentioned earlier, I wanted to create a series of striking works that stand out due to their colors and simplicity. No complex compositions, but something special nonetheless.
Setting Up the Scene
- In my studio, I created a simple setup with a clothesline, red bell peppers, and two carefully placed light sources to achieve the right shadows and highlights.
- Setting up the scene often takes the most time. Lighting, in particular, requires a lot of tweaking.
- To create the dark background, I positioned the studio flash at an angle behind the object, facing the camera. This causes the camera to receive a lot of light, effectively blinding it, while the rest of the light fades away. The flash was fitted with a rectangular softbox without a grid.
- At the front, I added a support light to ensure the front was somewhat lit, creating a more evenly lit image and softening the shadows. This flash had a round softbox without a grid.

Photography
Once everything was ready, it was time to start shooting. Using my Nikon Z8 and a Nikkor 105mm macro lens, I captured various compositions. The interplay of light and smoke was crucial in achieving the desired atmosphere.
I always take multiple shots, focusing on different points within the image. This ensures a razor-sharp final result with striking details.
Post-Processing
In post-processing, I enhanced the colours, added depth to the smoke, and accentuated the textures of the peppers to create a vibrant and realistic effect.
