Jons Kapel

Jons Kapel

Jons Kapel is one of Bornholm’s most dramatic natural landmarks — a place where myth and geology meet above the wild Baltic Sea. Located north of Hasle on the island’s rugged west coast, it consists of towering granite cliffs that rise up to 40 meters above the sea, carved by wind and waves into striking formations. A steep wooden staircase of more than 150 steps leads down the cliffside to a ledge known as “Jon’s Pulpit,” a natural platform where, according to legend, the hermit Jon once preached to local fishermen who gathered below on the rocks.

The atmosphere here is raw and awe-inspiring. From the top of the cliffs, the view stretches endlessly along Bornholm’s west coast, with the sea glittering far below and gulls circling in the wind. The sound of waves crashing against the rocks echoes up through the gorge, and the scent of pine and salt fills the air. It is one of those places that makes you feel both small and deeply connected to nature — elemental, powerful, and humbling.

In the softer light of morning or evening, the granite takes on warm, reddish tones, and the patterns of the rock — weathered over millions of years — become beautifully detailed. The combination of vertical cliffs, deep blue water, and Baltic light makes Jons Kapel a dream location for landscape photographers. Even on gray days, the mood is spectacular: mist rolling over the forest edge, sea spray rising from below, and the ever-present rhythm of waves against stone.
