Lago di Braies – Morning Calm and Autumn Colours in the Dolomites

An iconic image of an iconic lake

There are places in the Dolomites you never forget – Lago di Braies is one of them. The turquoise water, surrounded by steep mountain walls and pine forests, forms a stunning backdrop. Especially in the early morning, when the lake is still calm and the soft light glides over the water, the magic of this place truly comes alive.

During our trip to the Dolomites, this destination naturally had to be on the list. This time we stayed at Förra in Colle/Casies – beautiful apartments with a modern, natural design and exceptionally friendly owners. An ideal base for exploring the northern Dolomites. From Förra it’s about a 40-minute drive to the lake, so even if you want to arrive very early, it’s perfectly doable.

You’ll find beautiful scenes all around the lake

Location and route

Lago di Braies (in German: Pragser Wildsee) is located in the northeastern Dolomites, in South Tyrol. The lake sits at 1,496 meters and is easy to reach by car. From Colle or Dobbiaco, you drive via the SS49 and take the turnoff to Val di Braies. In high season it can be very busy, so arrive early – or better yet, visit outside peak season. Parking is available almost at the edge of the lake and there is plenty of space. Parking is paid.

Photographing at sunrise

The famous boathouse on the southern side of the lake is one of the most photographed spots in Italy. I arrived one hour before sunrise to secure a good position. At that moment I was still the only one there, but that didn’t last long. The photo below shows how popular this location is.

It gets crowded at the boathouse

It’s always a bit of a mixed feeling, but it’s to be expected at a place this accessible. Still, waking up early was worth it: the lake was completely calm, the light was soft, and the first rays of sunlight slowly turned the mountain peaks golden.

It’s definitely worth staying a little longer after sunrise – the light changes constantly, and every minute the landscape seems to take on a different tone. Don’t forget to walk a bit along the lake; every corner offers a new perspective.

Zoom in on details as well. It often results in beautiful images.

Walking around the lake

After my photo session, we headed back to the apartment for a breakfast for two. Afterwards, we returned to the lake for a beautiful walk around it. It’s a classic route and suitable for everyone. The trail is about 3.5 kilometers long and leads along the shoreline, through small wooded areas, and over wooden bridges. Along the way you constantly have views of the water, which shifts in color from deep blue to bright emerald green depending on the light.

Halfway through, we took a turn towards the Grünwaldalm. From the lake, it’s about a 45-minute walk. A nice option for a day with a slightly less demanding route.

The Grünwaldalm is a cozy mountain restaurant overlooking the valley. We enjoyed a delicious lunch there – highly recommended if you want to relax after a walk. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the food is honest and local, just as it should be in South Tyrol.

Don’t forget to look up along the way. Everywhere you’ll see the Dolomite peaks poking through the clouds.

Staying at Förra

Our stay at Förra in Colle/Casies was fantastic. The apartments are spacious, modern, and built with natural materials. The owners are exceptionally welcoming and happy to help with tips about hikes and day trips in the area. After a day in the mountains, it’s wonderful to come back to a place surrounded by forests and valleys.

Best time to visit

The most beautiful period to visit Lago di Braies is between late September and mid-October. The trees turn golden, and the summer crowds are gone. Early mornings can be chilly – so dress in layers and wear sturdy hiking shoes. It is a very popular location. This is mainly due to its accessibility; you can park almost directly at the lake. Choose your timing carefully if you want to avoid the crowds.

In conclusion

Lago di Braies is a wonderful photo location; the beautiful lake offers stunning views from every angle. Whether you come to hike, photograph, or simply enjoy nature – it’s an experience that stays with you. And yes, it’s busy in summer, but with a little planning, you can still find the peace the Dolomites are known for.
