About this place
Alpe di Siusi, known as Seiser Alm in German, is Europe's largest high-altitude alpine meadow, covering approximately 56 square kilometers. Situated in South Tyrol, Northern Italy, it lies at elevations ranging from 1,680 to 2,350 meters above sea level. The plateau is framed by the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites, including the Sciliar/Schlern massif and the Langkofel/Sassolungo group. Renowned for its rolling meadows, traditional alpine huts, and rich biodiversity, Alpe di Siusi is a year-round destination offering activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and skiing.

Photography tips
- Best Time: Sunrise when the light creates soft, golden hues. But personally I prefer sunset as it creates this beautiful warm light over the meadow and on the peaks.
- Recommended Image: Wide-angle composition featuring the cabins in the foreground and the Sassolungo massif in the background. A panorama that captures the entire scene is also recommended.
- Pro Tip: There are so many locations in this area, try to select one and stick to it. Wait for the light instead of walking around looking for a better location.
Hiking tips
- Getting there: you can obviously hike up there, but that may mean you need to start real early. Other options are the cable car, but that does not start before 9:00 and ends at 17:30. Best option for me was to take the car and the road up there. You will need to arrive early as the road closes after 9:00 until 17:00.
- Trail Variety: Val di Funes offers a range of trails suitable for all levels, from easy walks through alpine meadows to challenging hikes approaching the Odle/Geisler peaks.
- Adolf Munkel Trail: This popular trail provides close-up views of the Odle/Geisler group and is considered one of the most beautiful in the Dolomites.
- Seasonal Access: The best time for hiking is from late spring to early autumn. Always check trail conditions and weather forecasts before setting out, as mountain weather can change rapidly.
- Preparation: Wear appropriate footwear and clothing, carry sufficient water and snacks, and consider using trekking poles for steeper sections.
