About this place
Beetsterzwaag is one of Friesland’s most historic villages and has long been associated with wealth, culture, and landscape design. From the 18th century onward, affluent families from Leeuwarden built stately country houses here, attracted by the sandy soils and wooded surroundings of the Beetsterzwaag–Olterterp estate zone.
A walk through the village reveals this history immediately. Along the main road and its surroundings, you’ll find grand villas and former estates, many of them still privately owned, set within carefully designed parks and tree-lined lanes. These landscapes were shaped to reflect status and taste, with long sightlines, old oaks and beeches, and subtle elevation changes that are rare in much of Friesland.
Nearby estates such as Olterterp, Lycklamahûs, and De Slotplaats form an important cultural and natural network around the village. Their grounds are accessible via walking paths and offer a varied landscape of forest, open lawns, ponds, and historic buildings. In autumn, the estates are especially quiet, making it an ideal time to explore them on foot.
Beetsterzwaag itself has a refined, almost understated atmosphere. Small cafés and restaurants line the village, offering places to pause after a walk. Rather than dramatic sights, the village offers a sense of continuity — where history, landscape, and daily life are closely intertwined.
Beetsterzwaag is best experienced slowly, allowing time to wander through its estates, notice the details of its historic architecture, and absorb the calm rhythm of one of Friesland’s most distinguished villages.

Photography tips
Beetsterzwaag works best in soft, restrained light. Overcast days suit the estate landscapes well, as the diffused light brings out the warm tones of autumn leaves without strong contrast. Early morning often adds a light mist, especially along lanes and near open lawns, creating depth and separation between trees.
Look for long sightlines along tree-lined avenues and paths through the estates. These natural lines help structure the frame and emphasize the stately character of the landscape. Old trees, gravel roads, and the edges of parkland offer strong compositions without needing dramatic elements.
Details matter here. Fallen leaves on stone walls, moss-covered trunks, and reflections in ponds or puddles can be just as expressive as wider scenes. Take time to slow down and observe — Beetsterzwaag rewards a calm approach and careful framing rather than quick, obvious shots.
Hiking tips
Beetsterzwaag is ideal for relaxed walks rather than long or demanding hikes. The network of paths around the village and its surrounding estates is mostly flat and well maintained, making it accessible throughout the year. In autumn, fallen leaves can make some paths slippery, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
A good starting point is the village centre, from where you can easily reach the estate landscapes of Olterterp and De Slotplaats. These areas are connected by quiet lanes and forest paths, allowing you to combine village scenery with parkland and woodland in a single loop.
Most routes are suitable for short to medium walks and can be adjusted to your pace. There is little signage for long-distance trails, so exploring is best done with a map or by following local path markers. Take time to pause along the way — benches, clearings, and open lawns offer natural resting points, especially enjoyable in the calm of autumn.

This circular route from Olterterp moves through one of the more quietly preserved corners of Friesland — a landscape of peat remnants, alder carr woodland and open water that you rarely encounter anywhere else. The flat terrain (barely eleven metres of elevation change across the entire route) makes it an accessible outing for those who want to enjoy it by bike or on foot without too much exertion, but that certainly doesn't mean the surroundings have little to offer. It is precisely the horizontal stillness of this area that calls for a slow pace — an unhurried gaze along the reeds, the soft creak of a boardwalk underfoot, water close on both sides even when you can't always see it.
The heart of the route is the boardwalk trail at De Wite Mar, where a wooden path leads you literally over and through the marsh. It is that particular experience which gives this stretch its character: you find yourself inside the landscape rather than alongside it. The boardwalk sways gently, the water sits just below the planks, and in the early morning or under overcast light a haze sometimes settles over the reeds that lends the whole scene a timeless quality. For photographers, this is the kind of place where it's not about a single dramatic moment, but about patience and repetition — the light falling just a little differently each time, reflections appearing and dissolving.
At the end of the loop you pass through [beetsterzwaag], a village that has been bound up with Frisian prosperity and landscape culture for centuries. The grand country estates and tree-lined avenues laid out here from the eighteenth century onwards still feel present — not as museum pieces, but as living fabric woven into the village. The transition from the open peatland to the sheltered avenue structure of Beetsterzwaag is in itself a small discovery. Those who take the route at an easy pace will find three to four hours more than enough time to let that contrast settle in.
