About

On the hunt for spots not yet on the map.

I'm Hylke — based in Fryslân, in the north of the Netherlands. My wife and I travel for the landscapes: Ireland, the UK, and especially Scandinavia, which has stolen our hearts.

Mostly we walk. Long days on foot, sometimes a bike, food in the bag and a vague idea of where we'll end up. The camera is always with me — sometimes just a companion, sometimes the whole reason I'm there. Once in a while I'll set the alarm hours before sunrise and go shoot a place alone, just to see what it looks like before anyone else turns up.

What I shoot is almost always landscape. Occasionally an animal that decides to pose. But the part I really love is the combination — being out there, walking, looking, catching something.

And the name? As a landscape photographer, you're always after that one special spot. The catch is that the moment a spot gets popular, you end up queueing with everyone else. The trick — and the hunt — is finding the ones that haven't been discovered yet.

It took me a while to realise it isn't really about getting that one photograph. It's about being out there — walking, looking, quietly being surprised at how beautiful nature sometimes is. Coming home with a frame you're proud of is a generous bonus.

That's Spothunter.
