Heilig Kreuz Chapel, Wallberg

The Heilig Kreuz Chapel stands on the summit ridge of the Wallberg, high above Lake Tegernsee in Upper Bavaria. At 1,722 metres, this small mountain chapel is one of the most iconic viewpoints in the region — a simple white structure surrounded by alpine meadows and overlooking the shimmering blue of Tegernsee far below. Early to mid-October, when the deciduous forests around Tegernsee reach peak colour and the higher ridges may already show the first traces of winter. Visit early in the morning for the best light and quieter trails.

Practical tips:
The Wallbergbahn cable car from Rottach-Egern takes you most of the way up; from the top station, it’s about a 20-minute walk to the chapel. Dress in layers — temperatures can change quickly at this altitude. The summit area has a restaurant and viewing terrace with panoramic views across the Alps.
